My partner & I have just completed a fantastic trip up to Cape Palmerston & the Eungella region of the Mackay coast. After we spent a magical 7 days on the cape we wanted to unwind in the mountains with forest and fresh water. We had initially booked Broken Creek in the Eungella National Park just outside of the township of Eungella - Although suited to small tents and a great spot for small families, we realised it wasn’t what we were looking for. We stopped at the amazing Eungella Chalet for a quick research on ‘off road 4wd’ camp grounds and came across ‘Diggings Camp Ground’ in the ‘Crediton State Forest’. Let me tell you, this place is INCREDIBLE! If you are looking for cool mountain air, crystal clear swimming holes, starry nights & secluded private creek side camping, this is it! We found a stunning camp site that was maintained, private and provided direct access to the creek. The ranger was there on the day we arrived, who was friendly & offered up info about the park. This camp ground has drop toilets that are clean and stone fire pits mark out each camp spot. We had 3 glorious nights & days here. The township of Eungella was a mere 25 minute drive away that had supplies or meals provided by the friendly crew at ‘The Chalet’ in town. This might be a good time to mention that you will need to fuel up back down the range at Finch Hatton - there is no fuel up on the range. We did a couple of day trips out of the ‘Diggings Camp Ground’ one of which was a truly remarkable and an unforgettable swim up in the mountain pools of ‘Finch Hatton Gorge’. Anyways, if your in the Mackay region & this sounds like your idea of heaven, just take the ‘Diggings Road’ turn off about 5 minutes out of Eungella - DO NOT TAKE THE GOOGLE MAP way - this way is confusing and tricky for even the best & experienced 4WD driver. We had a wonderful time, see our pics! Happy camping people! PJ & TT
