We also drove through this area, we decided to stay three nights at the showground, $25per night power and water. Very dry but central to town, we rode the bike trial, easier to see historical sites, loved the way information centre with key set Up, self guided tour with a key that allows you to enter historical sites. Caretaker at the showground very animated and can be little grumpy but overall stay was good. New caretaker/s will be there soon. Don't miss the town, locals very friendly and willing to help.
Burra Show Grounds is very poor in regards to past show ground stays. Unfortunately the Caretaker believes that he has a given right to speak to arrivals in a rude manner. For the same fee of power&water you may only be given power and manually have to top up your van by obtaining water from the dump point. Suggest you pay and extra $10 and stay in the paid caravan park or the pub for a $20 in house visit and be guaranteed power with water attached.

Great place to spend a quiet night or more. The caravan park in town is currently packed tight. Here there is room aplenty. $20 gets you a level sight with power. If you stay longer , some have water.Arty was terrific , ensuring your power cable reaches where ever you decide to park. Shower block with hot showers . Good TV reception .If you get a heritage pass allow at least 4 hours to see it all, longer would be better, well worth it. You can use the key over a few days and take your time.
