For: Free, close to the city, huge, good for socialising
Against: Floods easily, Attracts party-campers and events, not much to do nearby

In April 2016 I organised a camping trip for our co-working space at Rubicon State Park, 90 minutes North East of Melbourne. We arrived on Friday night to a flooded campground! Most sites weren't really camp-able but we finally found a space big enough for our group of 10 a little further up the trail.

Amenities are pretty basic, just a drop toilet which may or may not have toilet paper. There were fire pits and the plenty of space to park cars. Free camping at its finest.

There’s plenty of dirt biking and 4 wheel driving to be had close by but not much in the way of walks. Luckily we had lots of beers and banter to keep us entertained. Let’s just say the campground and the surrounding area are perfect for outdoor sport lovers but less so for nature lovers.

When we were there we saw a heap of posters for an event that was happening the following weekend so we kind of got lucky there. I think this campground gets used by a lot of large groups so be prepared to make friends, or pack some ear plugs.
